Customs House Houseboats is based at the Old Customs House on the SA/VIC border. The only houseboat company operating north of Lock 6 to Wentworth, this is one of the most natural areas available to houseboat hirers, a 220 kilometre stretch river much of it within national parks.
The area is noted for its large sandbars, ideal to tie up to. These are wonderful spots to enjoy a large range of activities; swimming and other water sports, bushwalking and watching wildlife such as kangaroos, emus, echidnas or goannas. Fishing can be very successful here with Callop (Golden Perch, or Yellow Belly), and the elusive Murray Cod caught regularly, or you could even just relax and savor the river experience and scenery.
There are many spectacular cliff lines to photograph, such as Devils Elbow, a large sand and clay cliff with an impressive formation. This bend used to be a hazard for river steamer traffic prior to the locks and weirs being built, but is now easily navigable. Higgins Cutting is another former challenge with its narrow banks, however it is easily manageable. Complete instruction is given on the operation of the houseboat and with regard to any potential challenge no matter how minor. This gives you the opportunity to skipper the vessel with confidence and enjoyment on a truly relaxing holiday.
With only a small fleet servicing this area, the opportunity to savor the seclusion is boundless and travelling through the locks will open further reaches for you to explore during your time aboard.
Seventy kilometres downstream is Renmark, a vibrant Riverland town with a variety of shops including supermarkets, craft shops and bakeries. Moorings situated on the foreshore provide the hirers with the chance to eat out at locations within easy walking distance. On the way pass scenic areas such as Headings Cliffs, walk up to the lookout on top of these weathered sandstone cliffs and enjoy the spectacular view across the river and its flood plain. Chowilla Station is also a historic site, operating in conjunction with the world renowned Bookmark Biosphere. The Bookmark biosphere encompasses an extensive maze of interconnecting creeks and billabongs just waiting to be explored by canoe or dingy.
Upstream there many sites of historic significance, including the departure site at the Old Customs House, Cal Lal Police Station ruins, Kulkurna, the Rufus River and wrecks of vessels from a bygone era.
The Riverland has a typical Mediterranean climate with dry summers and mild winters. The region is well known for its year-round sunshine, however during winter, spring and some autumn months you will experience some cool nights and chilly mornings. During these months an evening campfire adds another dimension to your outback river experience. With the average maximum temperature ranging from 33 degrees C in summer and 16 degrees in winter, houseboat holidays are enjoyable all year round.
